Tilak Varma is confident and prepared to take on any responsibility

Tilak Varma has already established himself as one of the Mumbai Indians' go-to bats in the batting department in just his second season. The five-time winners had a terrible IPL season in 2022, but the left-hander's arrival was possibly the one bright spot. Varma amassed close to 400 runs in his inaugural IPL season, wowing everyone with his batting.

Varma has played pivotal roles in four of the five games he has played so far in the 2023 season, including a critical 17-ball 37 in Mumbai's most recent victory over Hyderabad on Tuesday (April 18), a 14-run victory. Despite having a brilliant IPL debut and the potential to be a reliable number three, Varma has primarily been employed as a floater in the middle order. But he doesn't seem the least bit bothered by it.

"I'm always at ease playing in any circumstance, and I've adjusted the way I play. I can bat everywhere, I've also told the management," Varma said in the post-game press conference. "They are also confident in me and use me as a batsman in various circumstances. I am certain that I can bat wherever.

Even though he has already scored a number of noteworthy runs in his limited career, Varma's cameo on Tuesday was particularly memorable because it was his first IPL match at his home stadium in Hyderabad. For the local boy who once again rose to the occasion when Mumbai most needed him to, it was undoubtedly a momentous occasion.

The desire to play on one's home field never goes away. It's much sweeter when you play well and then watch your team win. On the night before the game, I was quite apprehensive and couldn't really sleep. I've been playing here for all these years, so I'm happy that my preparations paid off.

Mumbai Indians enjoyed a strong start in the powerplay on a relatively sluggish surface before faltering in the middle overs. The bowlers for the Sunrisers, especially the spinners, maintained their composure to keep the scoring rate between overs 7 and 14 at seven runs per over. In the 15th over of the innings, Varma, who had gotten off to a slow start, broke the chains.

Cameron Green hit two fours in the first three balls of Marco Jansen's penultimate over, which he was bowling. Up until that point, he had been in excellent form. Varma finished the left-arm seamer's spell with two consecutive sixes to complete a 21-run over in an effort to capitalize on the momentum. He then followed it up by hitting Mayank Markhande's leg-spinner for a six and a four.

Varma remarked, "I was just playing the situation as it (the pitch) was turning a little." "The spinners had assistance, so I refrained from attacking them and waited for the seamers instead. I reasoned that since Mayank and Washi (Sundar) were bowling so brilliantly, I should play them (safely) before charging the fast bowlers. Later, I charged Mayank as well because I knew our batting was up.
