Discovering Cricket's History

Cricket is a very old game with a rich history. The earliest forms of cricket date at least to the thirteenth century, and the south of England is where the game first originated. Families of farmers in the southeast appear to have enjoyed it. Even in the year 1300, a game that appears to be comparable was reported, though it is unclear if this was cricket. But in the south of England in the late sixteenth century, the term "cricket" first appears in print. The game was being played at the school where this occurred.

Although the name "cricket origin "'s is unknown, there are a number of potential sources for the name. One of the most widely held beliefs is that it is of French origin. The word may perhaps be derived from the bat-related French word criqet. Although Old English and Flemish are other competitors for the honor. Even the French word "criqet" has Flemish roots. Therefore, it is difficult to pinpoint the origin of the name "cricket," but it has existed since at least the end of the seventeenth century.

The East India Company introduced cricket to India for the first time in the year 1600. There are numerous references to the game from the seventeenth century, indicating that it was played by a lot more people at this time and that it grew in popularity in the southeast of England. Later in this century, it was eventually played in a more formal setting. Even the possibility of professional players at the time has been raised. There was undoubtedly a lot of gambling going on during the matches that were played in the seventeenth century, and some of these games were undoubtedly played for significant sums of money. Eleven players were established on each side at this time as well. Although the bowling method had not yet been formalized, this period was crucial for the game because it marked the beginning of what the game is today.

The game was mentioned more and more frequently during the eighteenth century, and it was also much more popular during this time. There were several mentions of the game being played and tales of wagers with extremely high sums. Large crowds watched matches, and more formal games were organized. It also became a lot more popular spectator sport. The Lords Cricket Club in London was founded in 1787 and serves as the sport's hub. It is one of the oldest and most prestigious clubs in cricket today. The MCC, the recognized custodian of cricket's rules, is based there.

Cricket started playing more like the game it is now in the eighteenth century when over arm bowling was introduced. The game became significantly better because of being more accurate and entertaining to watch. The first foreign tour took place in America in the middle of the nineteenth century, and a journey to Australia's Melbourne Cricket Ground followed a few years later.

The legendary cricketer WG Grace started playing the game in 1864. More than any other individual, he was to have an impact on the game. When not playing the game, he continued to perform medicine because he was a doctor. He spent more than 40 years playing at the highest level. When he was 54 years old and had scored more than 1,200 runs, that was the year 1902. He was notorious for clashing with the umpires when he did not agree with their rulings and had a highly dominant personality. The crowds saw Australian Don Bradman, the greatest batsman to ever live, in the middle of the 20th century. He was so good that the English team in the "bodyline series" adopted rather blunt strategies to defeat the Australian team, bowling at the man rather than the wicket. This caused strained diplomatic ties between England and Australia up until the outbreak of World War II because it was so divisive.

The game altered in the 1960s as fewer matches were played and it became much more accessible to a larger audience. The first one-day international match was held in 1971 because of this. With the introduction of Twenty20 cricket in recent years, the game has become even more accessible. This makes the game much speedier and usually lasts no longer than three hours. Each team is given a maximum of twenty overs. The game is still evolving and getting better even today, and this trend is probably going to continue.
